Than Shwe’s bad omen at Zalun Pagoda

DVB (Democratic Voice of Burma)

Officials sacked after Than Shwe visit

Jan 15, 2009 (DVB)–Provincial and township administration officials in Zalun township have been dismissed after junta leader senior general Than Shwe was left disappointed by his trip to the Irrawaddy town at the end of last year.

A Zalun resident told DVB that State Peace and Development Council leader Than Shwe, who visited the town on 30 December 2008, had not been greeted by local residents and government employees when he arrived.

“[Than Shwe] was very disappointed as he was not greeted by anyone on his arrival to the town,” the local resident said.

“On 1 January, an order came from Naypyidaw which announced the dismissal of the township Peace and Development Council chairman and the re-assignment of the provincial PDC chairman to another post.”

The resident said locals did not have much affection for the junta leader. “

If someone we love visits our town, then the whole town will come out and greet him or her without any orders from anyone,” he said.

“We just didn’t greet Than Shwe as he wasn’t someone who would bring good things to us.”

The Zalun resident said the SPDC leader was also disappointed when he visited the historic Zalun pagoda in the town to light candles and pay homage.

“The lighter prepared for him by the pagoda administration didn’t work when he tried to light the candles,” the resident said.

“He was very angry about that and now we are hearing rumours that the pagoda administration staff are going to be fired too,” he went on.

“All the lighters at the pagoda had been specially prepared for him so there should have been no problems with them normally,” he said.

“But they only didn’t work when Than Shwe used them and people are saying this is a bad omen for Than Shwe as it suggests the fuel to light his life is running very low.”

Some town residents speculated that the sacking of local administration officials could also have been due to the low number of ‘Yes’ votes during the May 2008 constitutional referendum in Zalun, Hinthada and Lay Myat Hnar townships.

Zalun township PDC was unavailable for comment.

Did Than Shwe’s Grandson Kidnap Model?

By WAI MOE Thursday, January 8, 2009

The Rangoon rumor-mill is frequently active, but this might be the juiciest story for years—a soap opera-style plot involving Than Shwe’s grandson, a celebrity model, a jealous ex-boyfriend and a sordid kidnapping.

Sources close to Burmese celebrities told The Irrawaddy that rumors have spread like wildfire around Rangoon in the last two weeks that Snr-Gen Than Shwe’s favorite grandson, Nay Shwe Thway Aung, 17, helped a friend, Aung Myo, kidnap his ex-girlfriend, celebrity model Wut Hmone Shwe Yee. The two allegedly abducted Wut Hmone Shwe Yee from an unknown location in mid-December and drove her to Nay Shwe Thway Aung’s house in Hlaing Thayar Township where they held her for three days.

(left to right) A free pass to medical school—Nay Chi Lin Let; Than Shwe’s favorite grandson, Nay Shwe Thway Aung; Kidnapped but released—Wut Hmone Shwe Yee

The teenage model’s friends apparently attempted to contact her during that time but could not locate her.

According to tabloid journals in Rangoon, model Wut Hmone Shwe Yee is currently the girlfriend of Burmese Hip-Hop star Sai Sai Khan Hlaing. Last year, a YouTube video clip of Sai Sai Khan Hlaing and Wut Hmone Shwe Yee was popular among Burma’s young internet users.

Private journals and magazines in Burma were reportedly refused permission by the Burmese censorship board to publish photos of the model for at least a week in late December after rumors of her kidnapping spread, according to members of the journalist community in Rangoon.

Rangoon-based Weekly Eleven published an interview with Wut Hmone Shwe Yee in its December 31 edition. However, no mention of any abduction was made.

Sources in Rangoon told The Irrawaddy that Wut Hmone Shwe Yee has taken out a lawsuit against Aung Myo. Nay Shwe Thway Aung has reportedly provided a lawyer for his friend.

Wut Hmone Shwe Yee declined to comment on the issue when The Irrawaddy contacted her by phone on Thursday, saying she was too busy.

Nay Shwe Thway Aung is currently studying at Yangon Institute of Technology in Rangoon and is known to be Than Shwe’s first and favorite grandson. He has often appeared in Burma’s state-run media alongside his dictator-grandfather at state ceremonies and on trips.

However, Nay Shwe Thway Aung is no stranger to controversy. In October, reports circulated that he had used influence to get his girlfriend, model Nay Chi Lin Let, enrolled in Institute of Medicine 1 in Rangoon.

Nay Shwe Thway Aung was also implicated in a drug scandal in Rangoon last May. Two of his friends, Burmese tycoon Maung Weik and a son of Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Aung Zaw Ye Myint, were arrested after a member of the Than Shwe family found some pills—thought to be ecstasy—on Nay Shwe Thway Aung’s person.

Maung Weik and Aung Zaw Ye Myint were charged with procuring and selling drugs.

Than Shwe’s son, Thant Zaw Shwe, was also at the center of a scandal in recent years when rumors spread that he was involved with certain Burmese celebrities and models.

This is not the first time a kidnapping plot has been associated with the families of Burma’s powerful military elite. In the late 1990s, rumors spread that Gen Ne Win’s favorite grandson, Kyaw Ne Win, and his friends had kidnapped Nandar Aye, a daughter of junta No 2 Vice Snr-Gen Maung Aye.

A few years later, in early 2002, Ne Win’s grandsons and his son-in-law were arrested and charged with treason.

“Sometimes, government intelligence services produce rumors as tactics of psychological warfare,” said a journalist in Rangoon who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Sometimes rumors come from rival groups among the ruling hierarchies.”

Zarganar, Hold on, We Know You Are Alive: Comedian of Burma Jailed for 45 Years

By DR. CLARISSA PINKOLA ESTÉS, Assistant Editor, TMV Columnist

Writing today about Kathy Griffin and other comedians in the USA, I thought for the millionth time about dear Zarganar; the great comedic heart of Burma who just two months ago was insanely punished by the bloated multi-millionaire dictator of Burma, Than Shwe…

Than Shwe, surely the lost twin brother of Mugabe in Zimbabwe… Than Shwe, the walking talking roasted pig with his rotten teeth stuffed with diamonds from loot taken from his organized cocaine trade …

Than Shwe, it is said, was spiritually eaten by demons via his withholding of foreign aid, medical supplied, rice, water and doctors from the suffering Burmese whom he purposely injured in the Aug 2007 uprising of Buddhist monks and nuns…

and attacked relentlessly by demons again when he, Than Shwe, the walking corpulent corpse denied foreign aid again, denied doctors entry to treat the victims of the Nargis cyclone in 2008 that killed over 100,000 tribal and city Burmese and injured millions more.

And now Than Shwe in another of his Jabba the Hutless excesses, sentences a mere comic soul to 45 years in prison. Zarganar is 47 years old. Oh how great Than Shwe must be the power of the comedic to bring you down, how weak you must be to fear such a mere comic soul.

Could it be Than Shwe, that so fraught is your clawing lust for power, so malignantly filled with dukka is your mind, so bent you are on consigning yourself to everlasting vajra hell, that you have to silence one who makes others laugh?

Little Zarganar was found to have violated a mockery of justice written at Than Shwe’s behest… “the Electronics Act,” which regulates electronic communications in Burma… essentially bleating that no one is allowed to say anything to disparage the demonic infestations of Than Shwe.

Round, diminutive Zarganar was detained earlier in 2008 for criticising the government’s slow response to Cyclone Nargis. More than 100 activists who rose to prod the government and to deliver mercy to the Burmese, have been sentenced over the past 8 weeks in what amounts to a suspension of Burma’s pro-democracy movement.

“Zarganar led a group of entertainers who organised private aid deliveries to victims of Cyclone Nargis, which hit in May 08. An outspoken satirist of the military government, Zarganar had already been arrested and jailed four times before he was forced from his home again by the authorities in June 2008.”

The gentle but sharp witted Zarganar had said just prior to Than Shwe’s flying monkeys coming to arrest him: “No, we never encounter any problems, because we negotiated with [soldiers], and we just want to pass [out] our donation parcels. We just want to encourage our people. This is our duty.”

And Zarganar, through various groups outside Burma, including Amnesty International and PEN, the writers’ group that supports imprisoned artists and petitions for their release, we have a duty too… to not forget you.

Also convicted along with comedian Zarganar, are key members of the so-called ‘88 Generation of activists,’ all sentenced to 65 years… and a total of 68 years imprisonment was brought down against Ashin Gambira, leader of the monks’ alliance that led last year’s anti-government uprising.

I know Kathy Griffin would know just what to say about all this.
All free comedians throughout the world would know just what to say about Than Shwe.
I hope, for Zarganar’s sake, they will say it. Than Shwe needs MORE, not less, comedians on his case. Relentlessly. Publicly.

Comedians have ever been one of the few cultural groups strong enough, equipped enough with the weaponry of wit, to consistently speak truth to lies.

Semper fi.
