Public order charge brought against blogger and journalist

leave a comment »

Burma 1 August 2008

Public order charge brought against blogger and journalist

Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association condemn the charge of disturbing public order that have been brought against Zarganar, a well-known comedian and blogger, and Zaw Thet Htwe, a sports journalists. Arrested in early June for criticising the government’s relief efforts after Cyclone Nargis and, in Zarganar’s case, for talking to the BBC, they are facing up to two years in prison under article 505 (b) of the criminal code.

“The fact that the first hearing was held behind closed doors bodes ill for the way Zarganar and Zaw Thet Htwe will be tried for helping the victims of the cyclone,” the two organisations said. “We call on the United Nations and its new special rapporteur for Burma, who will soon visit the country, to intercede on their behalf.”

The trial of Zarganar and three other activists accused of participating in unofficial cyclone relief operations in the delta area began on 30 June before a special court inside Insein prison. A defense lawyer, Aung Thein, was quoted by Reuters as saying the trial was due to continue on 7 August.

At one party at the Dental School, he received suggestions for his stage names, and out of Zargana (tweezers), Pliers, Tincture and Gum-hpyu (cotton wool), he selected Zargana.

While in Dental School, he worked as a volunteer literacy teacher in Chin State and wrote about his experiences in ‘Man-Tar’ (May they have sweet dreams) which was published by the Sape Beikman.

In 1985 he graduated from Dental School with a BDS degree. In 1986 he formed the Myaponnamar Anyeint group which performed on TV and at events outside.

From then on, whenever he used to mock the leaders of the Burma Socialist Programme Party, he would receive a standing ovation from the audience.

He upset the authorities by criticising the special privileges of certain people, the poverty and problems faced by the poor and the farmers, spiralling prices and increasing difficulties in making ends meet, the incompetence of government departments, bribery and corruption, and General Ne Win’s military dictatorship.

During the 1988 uprising, he started speaking at Rangoon General Hospital, and his addresses always attracted a large audience and won rousing ovations.

During that time, he was made a leader of the student movements and worked hard for the formation of an interim government.

However, on 18 September 1988, the military seized power in a coup and he and his group were arrested on 2 October and held under section 10(a) in Insein Jail.

When he was first arrested he was taken to the Military Intelligence No 6 camp at 10 mile Prome Road and held there for 8 days where he was beaten by soldiers from the No 22 LID. He was released on 23 April 1989.

He then reformed the Myaponnamar anyeint group, but after he performed about3 shows in towns like Pegu, Thanatpin and Syriam in which he criticised the SLORC government, permission to perform was withdrawn and the troupe disbanded.

Video tapes by Zarganas group were frequently banned by the censors from being distributed. Some tapes were sent up by the censors to the leaders of the SLORC and didnt come back.

Although Zargana did not join a party or stand in the elections, he was close to students and graduates from the organisations such as ba-ka-tha (the All Burma Federation of Students Unions) and gave them help and support.

On 19 May 1990, about a week before the election, Zargana and A-yain were arrested under martial law and given sentences of 5 years each.

Between 1985 and 1988, Zargana took the lead in four films and 8 Video movies. Zargana was released on 25 March 1994.Goverment didn’t allow him to perform on stage. He can only participated in Video production.

Then he was banned for 3 years because of his video movie(The title is LUN).

After yrar 2000,Zarganar got permission to perform at film&video. But he didn’t get permission to perform On stage.

According to his Interview with BBC at Burmese Thingyan(April 2006), he was banned unlimitted.Even his name &voice are banned in local.

Zarganar was arrested third time on 25 Septenber 2007 due to his participation in Sangha (Burmese Monks)movement which is also nown as Yellowish revolution.

Then he was released on 17 October 2007.
