On the death of Kenji Nagai, a 50-year-old video journalist who was gunned down in Yangon in September, Tsuyoshi Takagi, chief of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, known as Rengo, told the participants, “Japan should review its official development assistance policy (to Myanmar) and consider economic sanctions.”

Toru Yamaji, president of Tokyo-based APF News Inc., which had a contract with the slain journalist, said in his message that he believes that Nagai’s efforts will stir democracy in the country.

Nagai was covering a violent crackdown on protests by Buddhist monks and ordinary citizens against the military government when he was shot.

The meeting was sponsored by a group of Japanese lawmakers who support democratization in Myanmar and civil organizations. The participants included people from Myanmar who live in Japan.
